Folk metal is a pretty neat little subgenre. Most of your best folk metal bands come from Russia, which is cool cuz they use female singers and oddball instruments not usually seen in metal.
Such as the balalaika. Wonderful instrument offers a great atmosphere in Russian folk metal.
Unfortunately a lot of these Russian bands never get out there and get overran by bands like fferyllt, and grai.
Here are a few examples of what's out there that never really gets heard.
